The short answer

The Kestrel Industrial R11 is the tablet to buy for most field service fleets: 1,180 nits measured, and a battery you can swap without tools. The Provantage Basecamp One is the budget pick at $840 — it survives the drop protocol but dims to 480 nits. The Northline Glacier 12 is the professional pick: it was the only unit that booted and held charge at -28 °C.

How to choose

How many nits do you actually need outdoors?

Direct summer sun at midday puts roughly 100,000 lux on the screen. In our outdoor legibility runs, crews read work orders reliably from 900 nits upward. Between 600 and 900 nits they shaded the screen with a hand or their body. Below 600 nits they walked to the van.

So: 900 nits is the working floor for outdoor work, 1,200 nits is comfortable, and anything above 1,300 nits mainly buys you readability in snow glare. Manufacturers quote peak white in a dark lab; we measure at full white after 20 minutes of use, which is typically 6 to 12% lower.

What does a MIL-STD-810H drop rating really mean?

MIL-STD-810H Method 516.8 Procedure IV is 26 drops onto 5 cm plywood over concrete, distributed across faces, edges and corners, and it may be spread across up to five units. A vendor can pass while every single sample ends the sequence damaged, as long as each unit survives its share.

We run the same 26 drops onto bare steel plate, on one unit, and we keep going until it stops working. That is a harder test than the standard and it is why our drop results are lower than the marketing number on the box. Compare our figures against each other, not against a spec sheet.

IP65, IP66 or IP67 — which do you need?

IEC 60529 defines the second digit by water test, not by severity of your day. IP65 is a 12.5 mm nozzle at 30 kPa, IP66 is a 12.5 mm nozzle at 100 kPa, IP67 is 30 minutes at 1 m depth. A tablet can be IP67 and still fail a pressure washer, because immersion and jetting are different tests.

For field service in rain, IP65 is enough. For washdown areas, food plants and marine decks, insist on IP66. Only choose IP67 if the tablet will realistically go into water — culvert work, water utilities, flood response. Check the port covers too: most ingress failures we see start at a torn USB-C flap, not the seam.

Is a hot-swappable battery worth the weight?

A hot-swap design adds roughly 90 to 140 g and $180 to $300 for the spare and charger. It buys a second shift without a vehicle return. On a 10-hour shift with a unit that measures 6 to 8 hours real runtime, that is the difference between finishing the round and not.

If your crews return to a depot mid-shift, or dock in the cab and drive between jobs, skip it and put the money into brightness or warranty instead.

How do you judge support before you buy?

Ask three questions in writing: the guaranteed parts availability window in years, the average turnaround for an advance-replacement unit, and whether the digitiser and battery are field-replaceable by your own techs. Get answers in the quote, not the brochure.

In this group the spread was wide. Kestrel quoted 5-year parts and shipped a replacement in 3 business days. Two vendors could not quote a parts window at all. That gap costs more over four years than any price difference on this page.

What does a rugged tablet cost over four years?

Take the unit price, add spare batteries, the vehicle cradle, the extended warranty and one out-of-warranty screen replacement per four units, which matches the failure rate we see in utility fleets. On the R11 that works out around $3,050 per seat over four years. On the Basecamp One it is around $1,760, plus more downtime.

The cheap unit wins on paper if your work is indoors, sheltered or short-shift. Once crews are outdoors in rain, the replacement rate closes the gap fast.

How we reviewed these

Every tablet was bought at retail. We tested three units of each of the seven picks and one unit of each rejected model, 11 models and 25 units in total, across 340 hours between 2026-03-02 and 2026-07-09.

The test set: 26 drops onto steel plate, jet and immersion ingress per IEC 60529, a -28 °C to +55 °C thermal soak with cold-boot and runtime checks, a continuous mapping-and-forms runtime run at 50% brightness, glove first-touch accuracy on 6 mm nitrile and rigger gloves, a teardown for serviceability, and a support audit by anonymous phone and email.

What we did not test, and why

  • Cellular modem performance. We could not control for carrier coverage across test sites, so any number we published would be a coverage measurement, not a device one.
  • Long-term battery ageing. Four months is not enough to state cycle life. We will revisit these units at 18 months.
  • Barcode scan engines. Only three of the eleven carried one, and cross-model comparison would have been unfair.
  • Drop onto ice or gravel. Our rig only reproduces steel and concrete repeatably.
  • MIL-STD-810H salt fog and altitude. We do not own a salt fog chamber and we will not repeat a vendor's claim as if we had verified it.
