What it is

An 11.6-inch sealed tablet built for crews who work out of a vehicle: meter reading, hydrant and valve work, inspections, and anything else where a form has to be filled in standing up in the rain. It replaces a consumer tablet in a third-party shell, and a clipboard before that. Fanless, hot-swap battery, pogo dock, and a mounting ecosystem that already exists. Base fleet SKU is $2,140, which puts it mid-pack for a rugged tablet rather than cheap.

Design & Build

What holds a rugged tablet together?

Under the rubber, a rugged tablet is a rigid inner frame with an elastomer skin moulded around it. The frame carries the loads; the skin absorbs the first hit and stops the unit skating off a bonnet. Corner bumpers are separate mouldings, either bonded to the skin or fixed on screws.

Almost every drop lands on a corner, and the corner is where the frame, the skin and the glass all meet. A bonded bumper that starts to lift at the edge is the first thing you see on a two-year-old fleet unit — grit gets under it, the lifted lip catches on a pocket, and within a month it is hanging off. A screwed bumper is a $20 spare; a bonded one is a chassis replacement.

On this unitMagnesium alloy inner frame with a mechanically fixed overmould, not bonded rubber. Each of the four corner bumpers comes off on four T6 screws and is sold as a spare at $22. Twisting the chassis across the diagonal by hand produced no creak and no visible flex. Kestrel has spent money in the right place here.

Can you use a rugged tablet with gloves and in the rain?

A capacitive touch controller can be retuned for different inputs. Glove mode raises sensitivity so a gloved finger registers. Wet mode does the opposite — it rejects the sheet of water that otherwise reads as a hundred simultaneous touches. Stylus mode narrows the accepted contact patch.

The modes are mutually exclusive, so switching between them is a thing an operator does several times a shift. If the switch is a hard key, it costs a second. If it is buried in a settings utility, people stop switching and start blaming the tablet — and a device that is unusable in the rain for the ten seconds it takes to find a menu is unusable in the rain.

On this unitFour modes: finger, glove, wet, stylus. Glove mode was accurate on application controls in 5 mm insulated gloves and noticeably less so on the on-screen keyboard, where we mis-keyed regularly. Wet mode works, but lives three taps into a Kestrel utility rather than on either of the two programmable hard keys — which are, at least, laser-etched and remappable.

Where does water actually get into a rugged tablet?

Sealing is a set of separate problems: doors over unsealed ports, gaskets in the case seam, membranes over the speaker and microphone, a card and SIM tray, and a pressure-equalisation vent that lets the internal air expand without pushing a gasket out.

The rating covers the unit as designed and closed. Almost every ingress failure in the field is a door left open, a gasket pinched at reassembly, or a hinge fatigued after two years of being flipped twenty times a day. Doors that need two hands, or that sit flush enough to be hard to tell shut, are the ones that end up open.

On this unitFour port doors, all captive, all closable one-handed in gloves and all with a positive detent you can feel through a glove. USB-C, USB-A and RJ45 sit behind doors; the pogo dock contacts are natively sealed and need none. Speaker and microphone are behind membranes. The vent is a small membrane-covered port on the lower edge that people regularly report as a hole. The claim is IP66 — dust-tight, jet-rated, no immersion depth claimed and none implied.

How do rugged tablets dock in vehicles, and who makes the docks?

A dock is a keyed mechanical cradle plus a power and data connector, usually pogo pins. Vehicle mounts are a separate ecosystem — RAM ball, VESA, or a proprietary arm — and management tooling is the software layer that lets an IT team see and update the fleet.

Docks outlive tablets. A fleet that has fitted 200 vehicle cradles will choose its next tablet partly on whether the cradles still fit, and a proprietary connector with one supplier is a commercial position as much as an engineering one. Whether management tooling is included or licensed separately is a per-unit annual cost that rarely appears in the first quote.

On this unitFirst-party pogo dock in desk and vehicle versions, RAM ball and VESA 75 compatible, keyed so it only seats one way. That keying is not as decisive as it should be: off-angle, the dock reads as connected but charges intermittently, which a fleet discovers as a support ticket rather than a fault. Kestrel's management console is included with the fleet SKU, not licensed separately.

In the hand

1,290 g on our scale as configured, and it feels like it: comfortable across two hands, tiring on one inside an hour. The balance sits slightly rearward of centre because of the battery bay, which helps when it hangs off the hand strap and hurts when you hold it out flat to show someone a form.

Controls and input

Every button was operated in 5 mm insulated gloves: power, both programmable hard keys, volume, and the battery latch. All positive, all findable without looking. Touch in glove mode is accurate on application controls and less so on the on-screen keyboard, where we mis-keyed regularly. Wet-finger mode works but lives three taps into a Kestrel utility. The power button sits under the right palm in landscape; we triggered it twice in four days.

Display

Why do rugged tablet screens crack, and what is optical bonding?

The display stack is a panel, a digitiser and a cover glass. In an air-gap build those layers are separate, with a void between them. In an optically bonded build they are laminated into one slab with clear adhesive.

Bonding buys two things: the glass is supported across its whole area rather than spanning a void, so it survives point impacts better, and there is no internal air to fog when a cold unit comes into a warm cab. It costs one thing, and it is a big one: the glass, digitiser and panel are now a single part. A cracked screen means the whole assembly, and on most fleets that means a depot.

On this unit11.6-inch, 1920 × 1080, bonded, with a matte anti-reflective coating and a claimed 1,000 nits typical — Kestrel's figure, not ours; we did not meter it. The bezel lip stands 1.1 mm proud of the glass on three corners and 0.4 mm at the lower left, which is the corner the dock contacts sit behind. Replacement is $410 at 5 to 8 working days.

In use

Kestrel states 1,000 nits typical; we did not meter it. What we can say is that at midday in direct August sun the form fields stayed readable without shading the panel, and legible through polarised safety glasses in landscape but not in portrait. Indoors and at a window it is unremarkable in the good sense — matte, low reflectivity, no rainbow off the digitiser layer.

Performance

How does a fanless rugged tablet handle heat?

A sealed device cannot have a fan, because a fan needs an opening and an opening ends the IP rating. So the heat path runs from the die into a spreader, into the chassis, and out through the surface — which is to say, into the air and into your hand.

This is the difference between a spec sheet and a working day. A processor rated at 15 W sustained in a laptop with a fan will not hold that in a sealed slab; it will run at its rated clock for a few minutes, then settle lower and stay there. Short bursts are fine. Sustained work — a long photogrammetry export, a big sync, a mapping session — runs at the settled clock, not the headline one. And the surface that carries the heat away is the surface you hold.

On this unitIntel Core i5-1345U, 16 GB LPDDR5, 256 GB NVMe. On a 45-minute Cinebench R23 loop at 22 °C ambient on a single unit, clocks settled about 9 per cent below the opening run at the 12-minute mark and stayed flat: no shutdown, no dimming, no stutter. The heat exits through the upper-right quadrant of the rear panel, which by minute 45 was unpleasant to hold barehanded. Docked or strapped, that is a non-issue. Held flat all afternoon, it isn't.

Under load

Cinebench R23 on a 45-minute loop, 22 °C ambient, single unit, mains disconnected. Clocks settled about 9 per cent below the opening run at the 12-minute mark and stayed flat there. No thermal shutdown, no screen dimming. Rear surface in the upper-right quadrant became unpleasant to hold barehanded by the end. Single unit, one ambient, our tool — not a standardised thermal test.

Battery

What are watt-hours, and what is a hot-swap battery?

Watt-hours are capacity: volts times amp-hours. Milliamp-hours alone are not comparable between devices, because a 7,600 mAh pack at 7.4 V and a 7,600 mAh pack at 3.7 V hold twice different energy. Hot-swap means the device holds its session on a small internal reserve while the main pack is out.

A fleet that can swap batteries never charges a tablet during a shift, which changes the shift. But the bridge is short by design — usually well under a minute — so the question is not whether hot-swap exists but how long it holds and whether one gloved person can do it standing up, outdoors, without setting the unit down.

On this unit56 Wh, converted from 7,600 mAh × 7.4 V nominal because Kestrel does not print watt-hours on the cell. The bridge held our running session for 42 seconds on every one of eleven attempts, which is long enough to do the swap gloved and unhurried. Charge from 10 to 80 per cent took 1 h 05 min on the supplied 100 W USB-C brick. Over four days of forms, camera and mapping we finished each day between 20 and 30 per cent — our pattern, not a battery benchmark.

In use

Ports & Connectivity

What radios and expansion does a fleet tablet need?

Wi-Fi for the depot, cellular for the field, GNSS for where the job is, and an expansion bay for whatever the fleet already runs — serial to legacy plant, a smart-card reader, a second battery, an extra radio.

Band coverage decides whether a device works on your carrier in the areas your crews actually go, and it is the single most common reason a fleet pilot fails. Antenna placement decides whether it holds signal when the unit is in a dock behind a metal bulkhead. Expansion decides whether the tablet can absorb the one weird requirement that every fleet has.

On this unitWi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, CAT-16 LTE on B1/3/7/20/28, and GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou with the antenna along the top edge, clear of a landscape grip. One expansion bay, with Kestrel offering serial, a second battery and a smart-card module. Antenna pass-through is present for vehicle mounting. No 5G option on this SKU, which is worth checking against a five-year fleet horizon.

Software & Support

Living with it

Two frictions surfaced after day two. The hand strap loosens about a centimetre over a shift and needs re-tensioning. And the pogo dock wants the tablet seated squarely: off-angle it reads as connected but charges intermittently, which is the kind of thing a fleet discovers as a support ticket rather than a fault.

Taken as a whole, the R11 is optimised for a docked fleet with a depot behind it: it spends its engineering budget on the things that make a shift work — the swap, the sealing, the gloved controls — and accepts a screen you cannot fix in the field as the price.

Claims, checked

IP rating — IP66

The 6 for solids means dust-tight — no ingress at all, not merely protected. The second 6 means protection against powerful water jets from any direction, which is the relevant figure for a unit that gets rinsed at the depot.

There is no IPX8 claim here, so no immersion depth applies. Where a brand does claim IP68, IPX8 means whatever depth the manufacturer declared: a bare IP68 with no stated depth and duration tells a buyer very little, and we print DEPTH NOT DECLARED when it is withheld.

IP testing uses static fresh water on new, undamaged units. It says nothing about salt water, detergent washdown, pressure washing, or a unit that has already taken a knock. If washdown matters in your environment, the claim to ask for is IP69K, not IP68.

MIL-STD-810

MIL-STD-810H, Method 516.8 Procedure IV — 26 drops from 1.8 m onto 50 mm plywood over steel, conducted in-house at Kestrel's Taoyuan facility rather than at an accredited third-party laboratory.

Kestrel declined to state how many sample units the 26 drops were distributed across, and declined to share the tailoring used for Method 514.8 vibration.

Operating temperature and other claims

Claimed operating range −20 °C to 60 °C, storage −40 °C to 70 °C. A cold-start heater is fitted and is claimed to engage automatically below −10 °C; we did not have a cold environment during our session and did not verify it.

No IK impact rating is published. No ATEX or IECEx listing, and Kestrel confirms the R11 is not offered for hazardous locations. All figures in this block are the brand's, not ours.

Asked 2026-04-28, answered 2026-05-06. Kestrel supplied the revision, method, procedure, drop height, impact surface, temperature ranges and support dates. It declined to give the drop sample count, the vibration tailoring, and the spare-parts availability window after end of sale.
