What it is
A wheeled, sealed injection-moulded hard case, 22 inches long, sold as maximum airline carry-on size and built around a tongue-and-groove O-ring seal, a purge valve and double-throw latches. It is the case competitors publish comparison tables against, and it is bought overwhelmingly for air-travelled camera, survey and diagnostic kit. Base SKU is USD 269.95 on the Pelican US store at build date, before any interior system.
Design & Build
Which 1510 are you actually looking at?
1510 is not one product. The base case (1510-000-110) has double-throw latches, two wheels and a retractable trolley handle. Pelican also lists a push-button latch system for the Protector line, borrowed from the Storm and Air series. The 1510M Mobility carries 4 in × 1.5 in polyurethane wheels on stainless bearings. The EU market sees the same case badged Peli.
Latch type changes one-handed operation and changes the wear surface. Wheel size changes the external envelope: Pelican states the 1510M is over maximum FAA carry-on size, which makes buying it for cabin use a common and expensive error. Interior configuration — no foam, Pick N Pluck, padded dividers, TrekPak, hybrid — changes both weight and usable volume.

Shell resin — where the documentation argues with itself
Pelican's own specification table for the 1510 gives Body Material: Polypropylene. The marketing copy on the same page describes solid-wall HPX™ construction. Retail and distributor listings for the identical SKU describe ultrahigh-impact structural copolymer.
These are not necessarily contradictory — HPX is a Pelican trade name, and polypropylene copolymers are a real family of high-impact resins. But a procurement specifier answering a chemical-compatibility, fire-load or materials-declaration question cannot resolve a generic polymer family against a performance adjective from published sources.
On this unitWhat is not in dispute is that the resin choice explains the temperature envelope: polypropylene stays serviceable at genuinely low temperatures and softens well above any environment a case meets outside a vehicle fire. The material question goes on the claims list.
Wall structure — why a cored wall changes what damage means
Pelican describes an open cell core with solid wall design. The walls are not solid slabs of resin but a cored structure — voids or ribbing between two solid skins.
It is the corrugated-panel principle: put material where the bending stress is and remove it from the neutral axis. That is why a case this size weighs 12 pounds rather than 25 and still resists crush.
On this unitThe field consequence is that damage to the outer skin is more serious than it looks. A deep gouge that breaches the outer wall removes a disproportionate share of that panel's stiffness, because the outer skin does most of the structural work. Scuffing is cosmetic. Penetration is not.
Sealing
Sealing geometry — the tongue-and-groove does the work
Lid and base meet in a tongue-and-groove channel that captures the O-ring and controls how far the seal is compressed when the latches close.
This geometry, not the O-ring alone, produces the IP67 result. An O-ring compressed too little leaks now; one compressed too much takes a permanent set and leaks later.
On this unitIt also governs long-term reliability. A case stored latched holds the O-ring at full compression continuously; a case stored unlatched does not. Whether Pelican recommends either is not stated in the published documentation reviewed for this build.
The O-ring — the least precisely specified part of the case
The 1510 specification table lists O Ring Material: Polymer. That is a category, not a specification. Pelican's own copy for the closely related 1510M describes a watertight silicone O-ring lid; third-party retail listings for the base 1510 describe a neoprene O-ring.
Silicone, neoprene and nitrile are three materially different elastomers with three different cold-temperature behaviours, three different chemical compatibility profiles and three different service lives.
On this unitOn the same spec table, Pelican specifies the purge valve's O-ring exactly — 70 Shore Nitrile, durometer and compound. The company is plainly capable of publishing an exact elastomer specification, and does so for the small seal but not the large one that determines whether the case is waterproof. A body that tolerates −40 °F is irrelevant if the seal at that temperature has hardened past conforming to the groove.
Purge valve — what the documentation looks like at its best
ABS body, 70 Shore Nitrile O-ring, 3-micron hydrophobic non-woven vent membrane. Fully specified.
The function is pressure equalisation. A case closed at sea level and flown at altitude, or closed cold and moved into heat, develops a differential across the lid that either strains the seal or makes the case very hard to open. The hydrophobic membrane passes air and blocks liquid water, the same principle as a breathable outerwear membrane.
On this unitThe 3-micron figure describes filtration, which matters for dust ingress through the vent path. This is the component most often omitted from cheap imitations of the format, and the one most likely to be the actual difference between a genuine IP67 result and a case that merely has a rubber seal.
Latches, Hinge & Handles
Latches — double-throw, and a transition in progress
The base 1510 uses double-throw latches in ABS with stainless steel hardware and integrated padlock protectors. Double-throw means the latch pulls the lid down in two stages.
Two stages deliver the seal compression the groove needs without asking the user to force the lid. ABS is a deliberate choice: the latch is intended to be sacrificial relative to the shell. It is also the part most exposed to freight handling.
On this unitPelican has introduced a push-button latch system to the Protector line, adapted from Storm and Air. Push-button latches open one-handed and with gloves, which double-throw latches resist. Whether current 1510 retail stock ships with the new latch is unresolved and is on the claims list.
Hinge and pins — the part a spec sheet cannot tell you about
Stainless steel pins through a continuous barrel hinge, with lid and base interleaved.
It is a strong arrangement and rarely the failure point, but it is the component that most rewards physical inspection.
On this unitHinge play under load is the earliest indicator of a case that has been over-stuffed or dropped on the lid edge. No published figure covers it, and we have not handled a unit.
Handles and trolley — a load-path question, not a comfort one
Over-moulded rubber top and side handles, plus a retractable extension trolley handle with what Pelican describes as an effortless release.
On a 12-pound empty case that may reach 30 pounds loaded, a moulded-in handle transfers load into the shell across a broad area. The trolley handle does not — it is a mechanism, with tolerances, running in channels.

Wheels & Interior
Wheels and interior systems — where one product becomes five
Two polyurethane wheels with stainless steel bearings on the base 1510. The interior is sold as no foam, Pick N Pluck, padded dividers, TrekPak, or a hybrid.
Polyurethane is the right call for concrete, gravel and airport terrazzo — more abrasion-resistant and less brittle in cold than a cheaper thermoplastic — and stainless bearings survive water that would seize plain steel.
On this unitEach interior configuration has a different weight, a different usable volume after the system consumes space, and a different relationship to the payload arithmetic. Pick N Pluck is the most protective and least reconfigurable; padded dividers the most reconfigurable and least protective against point impact; TrekPak sits between. None are covered by the case warranty — Pelican excludes foam explicitly.
The design is optimised for one thing: getting a sealed, crush-resistant box through third-party freight and airport handling without the contents knowing about it. Everything expensive in it — the cored wall, the groove geometry, the vent membrane, the stainless bearings — serves that. What the documentation does not settle is the seal elastomer and the true empty weight, which are the two numbers that decide cold-weather service life and cabin legality.
Claims, checked
IP rating — IP67 (manufacturer claim, certificate published as PDF, unverified by us)
The first digit, 6, is dust-tight: no ingress of dust at all, not merely limited ingress.
The second digit, 7, is temporary immersion — conventionally 1 m for 30 minutes. Pelican's warranty text matches that: watertight to 3.3 ft (1 m) for 30 minutes when properly closed with an undamaged O-ring in place.
It is a sealed case, not a dive case. IPX7 says nothing about sustained depth, and Pelican claims none.
Pelican publishes the IP67 certificate as a downloadable PDF, which is more than almost anyone else in this category does. We have run no dust chamber and no immersion of our own.
MIL-STD-810
Three documents are published on the 1510 page: the IP67 certificate, DEF STAN 81-41 (a UK Ministry of Defence packaging standard), and a MIL-STD-810G fungus test report. That is a genuinely better evidence package than most of this category publishes, and making certificates downloadable at all deserves credit.
It should still be described accurately. Pelican's page states the Protector line is designed to meet rigorous US/NATO mil-spec certifications, including an IP67 rating, and calls the case watertight, crushproof and dustproof. DEF STAN is a British defence standard, not a US one, and the only MIL-STD-810G document published is a fungus test — not drop, not crush, not vibration, not transit shock. No published certificate for the crushproof claim was located. 'Crushproof' and 'military-grade' are therefore marketing descriptions, not certified results, and should be recorded as such in any comparison table.
Why sample count decides the claim
Twenty-six drops onto one unit is a durability result. Twenty-six drops spread across five fresh units is a much weaker one, and both are published as “MIL-STD-810H, 26 drops”. MIL-STD-810 is a method, not a pass/fail certification, and compliance is self-declared by the manufacturer.
Operating temperature and other claims
Pelican publishes an operating range of −40 °F to 190 °F (−40 °C to 87 °C).
Whether that figure describes the body, the seal, or the assembly is unresolved in the published documentation. Polypropylene comfortably tolerates the low end; the question is the elastomer.
For anyone specifying against the −40 °F figure, the unspecified lid O-ring is the open risk: a seal that has hardened past conforming to the groove leaves a cold-tolerant body wrapped around a leak.

Questions people ask
Pelican rates the 1510 IP67 and publishes a downloadable IP67 certificate for the model. The warranty guarantees it watertight to 1 metre for 30 minutes when correctly closed with an undamaged O-ring fitted. It is a sealed case, not a dive case, and Rugged Magazine has not immersed one.
