What it is
A fully rugged 10.1-inch detachable tablet with an optional keyboard base, two expansion bays and legacy dock compatibility. The interesting part of the G2 for a specifier is not the silicon: it is that this is one of the few current fully rugged tablets that keeps a genuine detachable keyboard, a true serial option, a thermal camera option and legacy dock compatibility in the same product — and that almost every one of those options is mutually exclusive with another one. The G2 is bought on configuration, not on benchmark.
Design & Build
Chassis and sealing — IP65 is conditional on a latched door
A slate with a magnesium-alloy substructure and elastomer corner protection, built around a sealed, fanless architecture with gasketed port doors rather than a fully potted design.
IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets, but only while the doors are latched. A device with a door left open is not an IP65 device, and door hinges are among the first things to fail on a fleet that opens ports daily.
On this unitPanasonic states the IP figures are verified by an independent third-party lab following IEC 60529 sections 13.4, 13.6.2, 14.2.5 and 14.3. That is more specific than most vendors disclose, and the section numbers tell you which tests were actually run. We have not run an ingress test ourselves.
Which G2 are you actually looking at?
Three distinct machines have carried the Toughbook G2 name since 2021. mk1 launched in North America in July 2021 and is superseded; mk2 is end of life; mk3 is current.
Procurement documents, reseller listings and fleet inventories frequently say G2 without a mark, and the marks are not interchangeable — the CPU generation, memory type, Bluetooth revision and GPS module all changed at mk3.
On this unitmk2 to mk3: 12th Gen Core i5/i7 vPro becomes Intel Core Ultra 5 135U vPro Series 1 with an NPU; DDR4 becomes DDR5x; Bluetooth 5.1 Class 1 becomes 5.3 Class 1; u-blox NEO-M8 becomes NEO-M9N; MobileMark 25 runtime rises from 7/12 hours to 11/15 hours. One thing to carry into a tender: the mk1 launch announcement described three modular expansion areas and up to 36 xPAK combinations, while Panasonic's current North American G2 page describes two expansion areas and 84 combinations. Both figures are Panasonic's; they describe different machines. A specification document that inherited the phrase three expansion areas from a 2021 source does not describe the device that will be delivered.
Display
Display and digitiser — 16:10, and a peak-brightness claim
A 10.1-inch WUXGA (1920 × 1200) active-matrix panel at up to 1,000 cd/m² with an anti-reflection treatment, a glove-enabled capacitive touchscreen and a separate IP55-rated digitiser for pen input, with glove, pen and rain touch modes and a pressure-sensitive layer marketed for e-signature capture.
The 16:10 ratio is a real advantage over 16:9 rugged tablets for form-filling and asset management, which are overwhelmingly portrait-ish documents. Outdoor legibility is decided by sustained panel output and surface treatment, not by a peak figure on a datasheet.
On this unitThe 1,000 cd/m² figure is a peak-brightness claim. Sustained outdoor brightness under thermal load is one of the things a hands-on session exists to check, and no measured figure is published here.
Performance
Compute and thermal management — a fanless ceiling
An Intel Core Ultra 5 135U with vPro, integrated Intel graphics and an integrated NPU — Panasonic's first G2 with on-device AI acceleration.
A fanless 10.1-inch sealed slate has a hard thermal ceiling. A 15W-class part with an NPU offloading inference from the CPU is a sensible way to add capability without adding heat. Sustained-load behaviour in a sealed fanless chassis is exactly where rugged tablets differ from each other, and exactly where no vendor publishes numbers.
On this unitPanasonic references advanced thermal management without publishing a throttling profile. One correction worth flagging: the European G2 mk3 datasheet describes the machine as powered by the 12th Generation Intel Core Ultra5 135U. The Core Ultra 5 135U is a Meteor Lake part — Core Ultra Series 1 — not a 12th Generation Core processor. Panasonic Connect Asia's comparison table gets this right. It is a copy error rather than a hardware misrepresentation, but it is the kind of error that propagates into tender documents.
Memory and storage — the quick-release SSD is the operational feature
16GB of LPDDR5x on board, expandable to 32GB and soldered rather than user-serviceable, with a quick-release OPAL-encrypted NVMe SSD at 512GB or 1TB standard and a 2TB option on some configurations.
Soldered memory is the trade for thickness and sealing, and it sets the repairability ceiling at the factory. The quick-release SSD is the single most operationally significant feature on this device for regulated fleets: storage can be pulled without opening the chassis, which is what makes device-level data sanitisation practical at scale.
On this unitPanasonic notes roughly 20GB is consumed by a recovery partition and about 1GB by a system-tools partition, neither user-accessible. Removal time and tooling are unassessed.
Battery
Power — where the 15-hour headline comes from
A standard battery pack (11.4V, 4360mAh) or an extended pack (10.8V, 6300mAh), with an optional bridge battery enabling hot-swap.
A specifier who reads only the featured-specs box will size a deployment on a number that assumes a battery, a form factor and a usage mode they may not have ordered.
On this unitPanasonic's North American page and European datasheet both lead with approximately 15 hours on MobileMark 25. The Asia-Pacific specification for the G2 mk3 Standard shows how that is reached: the standard pack delivers approximately 11.0 hours as a tablet and 10.5 hours with the keyboard base; the extended pack delivers approximately 15.0 hours as a tablet and 14.5 hours with the keyboard base. The extended pack takes the Standard model from 1.19 kg to 1.27 kg and from 23.5 mm to 32.8 mm thick, and lengthens charge time from about 2.5 hours to about 3 hours. None of this is hidden — it is all in Panasonic's own table.
Ports & Connectivity
Ports and I/O — native RJ-45 on a 10-inch slate
On the tablet: one USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, one Thunderbolt 4 USB-C with Power Delivery, gigabit LAN, a dual antenna connector, dual SIM (nano-SIM plus eSIM) and the docking connector. The optional keyboard adds USB-C, USB-A and its own docking connector.
A dongle is a thing to lose in a ditch, and the equipment a field machine connects to is frequently older than the machine.
On this unitFor a 10.1-inch sealed tablet this is generous — most competitors in this size class have dropped native RJ-45 entirely.
Expansion and modularity — one option per bay, and the collisions
Two user-replaceable expansion areas. The rear area accepts a smart card reader, an HF-RFID (NFC) reader or a fingerprint reader. The top area accepts a serial interface, a 2D barcode reader, a second USB 2.0, a second LAN, a FLIR thermal camera or a microSD slot.
Both bays are strictly one-option-per-bay: Panasonic's footnotes state that only one option is possible in each expansion bay area. That constraint is the whole story of configuring a G2.
On this unitA crew that wants NFC badge-in and fingerprint authentication cannot have both — same bay. A crew that wants the thermal camera and a barcode reader cannot have both — same bay. The 84 different combinations headline on Panasonic's North American page is arithmetically defensible and practically misleading, because the combinations a given workflow actually needs are frequently the ones that collide.
Radios and antennas — 5G and dedicated GPS are exclusive
Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211, Bluetooth 5.3 Class 1, and optional WWAN: 4G LTE (Sierra Wireless EM7421 in AP documentation, EM7595 on the North American page) or 5G Sub-6 and C-Band (EM9190). Dedicated GPS is a u-blox NEO-M9N.
Antenna placement in a sealed magnesium chassis is hard, and Panasonic designs its antennas in house rather than buying a module. That is one of the genuine differentiators of the Toughbook line.
On this unitDedicated GPS and the 5G module are mutually exclusive configurations. The 4G module and dedicated GPS can operate simultaneously; the 5G module and dedicated GPS cannot. For any fleet that needs both high-bandwidth cellular and survey-grade positioning, that is a specification-stopping fact, and it appears only in a footnote.

Read together, the parts describe a machine sold on configurability that is bounded, in practice, by two single-option bays and a handful of footnoted exclusions. Whether the sealed fanless chassis holds its clock, its brightness and its seals through a working year is exactly what this page cannot yet tell you.
Claims, checked
IP rating — IP65 (manufacturer claim, unverified by us)
The first digit, 6, is the solids rating and it is the top of that scale: dust-tight, no ingress at all.
The second digit, 5, is water projected from a 6.3 mm nozzle from any direction. It covers rain and hosing. It does not cover immersion, which would require IPX7 or IPX8, and Panasonic makes no such claim.
Panasonic states the rating is verified by an independent third-party lab to IEC 60529, citing sections 13.4, 13.6.2, 14.2.5 and 14.3. The rating is conditional on every port door being latched. We have not run a dust chamber or a jet on this unit.
MIL-STD-810
Panasonic states MIL-STD-810H drop testing. The European G2 mk3 Quick Release SSD datasheet and the Asia-Pacific comparison table state 180 cm, the latter citing 26 drops onto plywood under Method 516.8 Procedure IV. MIL-STD-810 is a method, not a certification, and compliance is self-declared.
Three different drop figures appear across Panasonic's own materials: 180 cm (Europe, and the Asia-Pacific comparison table), 120 cm to plywood and 120 cm to concrete (the full specifications table on that same Asia-Pacific page), and 6 ft to plywood reduced to 3 ft with the keyboard attached (North America). The 180 cm and 120 cm figures appear on the same page in two different tables for the same product. The keyboard derate appears only in North American material. For a fleet running the G2 permanently in clamshell mode, that derate is the operative number and it halves the rated drop height. We have asked Panasonic to reconcile these figures.
Why sample count decides the claim
Twenty-six drops onto one unit is a durability result. Twenty-six drops spread across five fresh units is a much weaker one, and both are published as “MIL-STD-810H, 26 drops”. MIL-STD-810 is a method, not a pass/fail certification, and compliance is self-declared by the manufacturer.
Operating temperature and other claims
The published operating range is −29 °C to 63 °C to MIL-STD-810H. Panasonic Connect Asia attaches a footnote marker to that entry whose text reads that the 5G model cannot be used, and the same marker is attached to the GPS entry. If the range genuinely excludes 5G configurations, that is a material limitation for cold-climate or high-heat deployments specifying 5G.
The same specification carries a footnote stating UL 62368-1 evaluation for ambient temperatures up to 35 °C with the optional AC adaptor and 40 °C without. That sits against the 63 °C operating claim. These are different standards measuring different things — safety certification versus environmental survivability — and both can be true at once. But a specifier reading 63 °C and deploying in a vehicle cab that reaches 50 °C while charging is operating outside the safety evaluation, and nothing in the featured-specs box says so.
Warranty also differs by region: North America publishes 3 years parts and labour, Asia-Pacific publishes 1 year for the G2 mk3 Standard. Regional variation is normal and legitimate; it is flagged because multinational fleet buyers routinely assume parity.

Questions people ask
No. It is water-resistant to IP65 — protected against water jets from any direction (IPx5), not against immersion. Panasonic states this is verified by an independent third-party lab to IEC 60529. IP65 protection is conditional on all port doors being properly closed, and we have not run an ingress test of our own on this device.
